With almost 50 years of sailing experience, Andrea Mura is one of Italy`s greatest. Mura, from Cagliari, Sardinia, started sailing in the early 1970s and excelled in competitive racing.
Two European 420 titles, a Junior World 470 title, and three Olympic campaigns were among his early successes in Olympic-class vessels. The Italian government awarded him the "Silver Medal for National Athletic Value" aged 18.
Mura became mainsail trimmer and tactical assistant for Paul Cayard`s "Il Moro di Venezia" America`s Cup team in 1989, helping win two world championships and a Louis Vuitton Cup.
The 2007 purchase of Mura`s Open 50 yacht "Vento di Sardegna" (Wind of Sardinia) launched his solo ocean racing career. Mura has led Italian sailing to remarkable success with the Sardinian flag and Four Moors:
Italian first to win Route du Rhum solo transatlantic race (2010)
- 2013 and 2017 OSTAR (Original Single-handed Transatlantic Race) champion.
- Set many course records, including Twostar transatlantic (2012) and Québec-Saint Malo (2012).
- Placed third in the Global Solo Challenge (2023-2024) and became the fifth Italian to solo round the planet.
In the 2017 OSTAR, he navigated "the perfect storm" by sailing beyond the 58th parallel north when several competitors had to abandon the race, demonstrating his expertise and courage.
Mura founded Veleria Andrea Mura Sail Design in 1985, a sail loft noted for high-tech innovations, in addition to racing. He is a UNICEF Testimonial, Raymarine navigation equipment ambassador, and One Ocean initiative enthusiast.
Mura received two Italian Olympic Committee Gold Medals for National Athletic Value, the Confindustria Award for "The Image of Italy that Does and Wins," and a sculpture in the Port of Cagliari honouring his remarkable career.
His 2013 book "The Adventure, the Unknown and Fear" won the Carlo Marincovich literary prize, solidifying his standing as a leading sailing personality in Italy and beyond.

On Friday, ESTELA’s Vilanova team collaborated with our friends at @barcelonacrewyacht for a ‘Mediterranean Cooking Masterclass’. A group of yachties came along to learn how to make classic dishes like paella and tortilla de patatas, over drinks of course!
