Just one example of how we work is our annual Superyacht Handbook, ‘The Y’, an indispensable resource for yacht cruising the Mediterranean and beyond. Not only does 'The Y' provide important information for captains, but it suggests itineraries and places of interest that are out of the ordinary.

In addition to a busy yacht show schedule, each year we host at least four social events that have become must-attend gatherings for yachties in Mallorca, such as our Superyacht Poker Tournaments and the End of Season Party.

Case study: Italy’s D-Visa for seafarers

The debate over Italy’s D-Visa — what it does and doesn’t cover, who is eligible and how to get one — rumbles on. In the meantime, British captain, Billy Stevens, has kindly provided some detailed, factual information based on his and his crew’s own experience. Their boat will shortly be relocating to a new base in Italy, making for an excellent case study of crew requiring a long-term visa, which enables them to live and work in Italy for a year at a time. 1. Having attempted to apply for the D-Visa in Palma de Mallorca, Barcelona and Madrid*, they managed to book appointments** (with three weeks’ notice) in the UK, via the link below. Update: Italy’s D-Visa for seafarers

Following our news update in December about the Italian D-Visa for seafarers, there has been a fair amount of discussion about how it works and where to get one. We have also received feedback from clients aiming to obtain the newly available visa. The Italian association of maritime agents, Federagenti, has issued the below clarification about the D-Visa and what it covers. To recap, seafarers stationed in Italy, holding a contract requiring them to stay in the country for an extended period — beyond the 90 days (per 180 days) permitted by the Schengen C-Visa — can now apply for the D-Visa, which grants stays of up to one year. The D-Visa incorporates the C-Visa, obviating the need to apply for both, if travelling elsewhere in Schengen in the interim. However, it is important to note that the ‘D’ element of the visa is valid for Italy only. Elsewhere within Schengen, the 80/190 limitation remains, as per the standard C-Visa. Within Spain, the D-Visa is issued only by the Italian embassy in Madrid. EU passport-stamping to end in May 2023

**UPDATE** Since publication of this post, the roll-out of EES has been postponed (again) until the end of 2023 at least. A new launch timeline is set to be decided in March. — The European Union’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) is set to go live this May. EES is an automated IT system for registering non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay (or transit), each time they cross the external borders of the EU. All travellers who require a short-stay visa, and those who do not, will be affected. The biggest change will be that passports are no longer stamped physically, but will instead be recorded on the system electronically. The purpose of EES is to make the border control process more efficient, automating day-counting (to prevent overstaying) and recording refusals of entry. Travellers will be verified biometrically by camera and fingerprint scanner. Even though the introduction of EES has been long trailed during the past five years, there remains uncertainty even now about how its introduction this spring will affect non-EU seafarers. Italy’s ‘D’ Visa; what does it mean for crew?

Crew movements in and out of Italy have been a pain point during the past year, with immigration officials declining to stamp passports of non-EU crew boarding yachts in its ports. The new rule — to no longer recognise vessels as ex-EU territory unless departing from the Area — meant that the 90-day period permitted under the Schengen ‘C’ short term visa continued to count down while in Italian waters. To great fanfare, it was announced recently that Italy would from 2023 offer its 365-day ‘D’ visa to seafarers, to get around the problem of overstaying. There had been some speculation among local agents that a new stamping protocol would also be (re-)introduced, while seafarer visa issues were being addressed. However, unfortunately this appears not to be the case. The ‘D’ visa entitles the holder to stay for up to 365 days in Italy only, which is useful for those non-EU crew stationed in the country for extended periods. It does nothing to address the issue of Schengen-wide travel rules.
