EU passport-stamping to end in May 2023

**UPDATE** Since publication of this post, the roll-out of EES has been postponed (again) until the end of 2023 at least. A new launch timeline is set to be decided in March. — The European Union’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) is set to go live this May. EES is an automated IT system for registering non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay (or transit), each time they cross the external borders of the EU. All travellers who require a short-stay visa, and those who do not, will be affected. The biggest change will be that passports are no longer stamped physically, but will instead be recorded on the system electronically. The purpose of EES is to make the border control process more efficient, automating day-counting (to prevent overstaying) and recording refusals of entry. Travellers will be verified biometrically by camera and fingerprint scanner. Even though the introduction of EES has been long trailed during the past five years, there remains uncertainty even now about how its introduction this spring will affect non-EU seafarers. Italy’s ‘D’ Visa; what does it mean for crew?

Crew movements in and out of Italy have been a pain point during the past year, with immigration officials declining to stamp passports of non-EU crew boarding yachts in its ports. The new rule — to no longer recognise vessels as ex-EU territory unless departing from the Area — meant that the 90-day period permitted under the Schengen ‘C’ short term visa continued to count down while in Italian waters. To great fanfare, it was announced recently that Italy would from 2023 offer its 365-day ‘D’ visa to seafarers, to get around the problem of overstaying. There had been some speculation among local agents that a new stamping protocol would also be (re-)introduced, while seafarer visa issues were being addressed. However, unfortunately this appears not to be the case. The ‘D’ visa entitles the holder to stay for up to 365 days in Italy only, which is useful for those non-EU crew stationed in the country for extended periods. It does nothing to address the issue of Schengen-wide travel rules. ANTIGUA CHARTER YACHT SHOW 2022

Earlier this month we attended the Antigua Charter Yacht Show, making a welcome return after a disrupted couple of years. Around forty of the largest charter yachts were on show to brokers and clients, with some 300 intermediaries in attendance and a similar number of colleagues from the maritime industry. Always a relaxed event, Francesco Gennai used the opportunity to catch up with friends, clients and partners, keeping a video diary, touring some boats on show and conducting interviews. In the videos below we start with pre-Show preparations and Day One activities. On Day Two, we spoke with Captain Barry Duck on the freshly refitted S/Y Afaet, talking about what makes an Antigua charter so enjoyable.
